A New Era for Hollywood Storytelling
The film industry traditionally serves up entertainment, but a new wave of Hollywood insiders is aiming to reshape storytelling to foster social and environmental change. Spearheading this initiative is Robert Rippberger, co-founder of the Social Impact Entertainment Society (SIE). His belief is that cinema can wield significant influence, with the potential to profit while addressing critical issues.
Success with a Purpose
Rippberger cites blockbuster films such as Avatar, Titanic, and Star Wars as prime examples of how impactful stories can also achieve commercial success. These films, which crossed the $2 billion mark, carried messages about environmentalism, classism, and ethics. This intersection of profit and purpose is at the heart of SIE's philosophy: “Films can make money and have impact. It doesn’t have to be either or,” Rippberger argues.
Uniting Voices for Change
During the pandemic, Rippberger and fellow filmmakers William Nix, Rebecca Graham Forde, and Tobias Deml recognized their shared mission to influence media positively. They launched SIE as a central hub for creatives across various media platforms including film, television, and podcasts. With approximately 1,500 members, their goal is to amplify voices dedicated to making a difference. Forde emphasizes this community aspect, stating, “Let’s create a community where all of us can come together... so we can all rise up together.”
Engaging with Impactful Storytelling
The formation of SIE signifies a cultural shift in Hollywood—one that recognizes the responsibility of creators to engage with the pressing issues of our time. As they prepare for their next gathering, the Society aims not just to inspire participants but also to innovate how stories are told, ensuring that the next blockbuster not only entertains but also educates.
