After personal tragedies, including the loss of his mother and wife, he turned to the rugged landscapes of North Dakota for solace and reflection. Now, over a century later, modern visitors will be able to connect with that same land and the spirit of conservation that Roosevelt championed. This project is highlighted by the library's unique eco-centric design, which incorporates native plants into its roof, helping it harmoniously blend into the prairie landscape.

According to Edward O’Keefe, CEO of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library Foundation, this library represents a shift in how we understand presidential libraries. "It’s not merely a museum with artifacts; it’s a dynamic experience," O'Keefe notes. The library emphasizes learning and engagement, encouraging visitors to reflect on Roosevelt's legacy and their potential impact on the environment and society.
In designing this library, the foundation invited innovative ideas through a design competition launched during the initial COVID-19 pandemic, which underscored the need for gathering spaces even more. With Oslo-based architecture firm Snøhetta at the helm, the focus has been placed on creating a welcoming atmosphere that inspires community and nature integration.
